Digital retinal imaging
Digital retinal imaging is one of the best diagnostic tools available to an optometrist. It’s used to take a high-resolution image of the inside of your eye. This optional exam allows us to assess the health of your retina, optic nerve and blood vessels, giving us a detailed visual reference that allows us to evaluate your eye health and track eye conditions over time. We can easily compare current images with previous ones, and even the most subtle changes can help us detect and manage potentially sight-threatening diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension and macular degeneration.
This technology gives a much more detailed view into your eye than a standard exam, which means we can detect problems earlier. And for most issues, early detection is key to long-term health. Here are a few examples of what these high-res pictures can show us:
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Cancer
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Glaucoma
- High blood pressure
- Retinal detachment
- And more
